Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The hour will not be established till the sun rises from the West; and when it rises (from the West) and the people see it, they all will believe. And that is (the time) when no good will it do to a soul to believe then." Then he recited the whole Verse (6.158)
Today, Islamic preachers try to confirm this prophetic tradition scientifically, by using the phenomenon of "magnetic pole reversal" of the earth.
Nevertheless, the truth is, the sun will still not rise from the geographical west, despite the reversal of earth's poles.
This answer is given by one scientist:
I work as a researcher in planetary magnetism. When we talk about pole reversal, we actually allude to "magnetic pole reversal", not geographic.
How does magnetic pole reversal work? Is it apocalyptic? Bear with me to find the answers....
Inside earth, molten iron is churned by the heat of the core, which enables the molten material to rise (analogous to when we boil something). As the molten iron blobs rise in the mantle of earth, they cool off and sink, where they again get heated by proximity to the hot core and rise. The cycle continues and as a result of continuous motion (convection) of molten material (particularly iron), electric currents are generated (movement of ionic material). Now science tells us that a magnetic field is produced whenever an electrical charge is in motion. That is exactly what happens inside the earth. This continuous motion of molten material, via electric currents, generates a magnetic field which is self-sustaining. The distribution of this mag. field is governed by how the currents and the flow inside the earth evolve, resulting in some spots where the intensity of the magnetic field is strong compared to other places. The locations of these points where the magnetic field concentrates are what we refer to as "magnetic poles". Now since the flow drives currents which in turn creates the magnetic field, if the flow beneath the surface of the earth is changing all the time, you would expect the distribution of the magnetic field to also change continuously. That is exactly what is happening. And this is where we talk about "pole reversal". Sometime in future, the magnetic poles may have drifted so much from their present positions, so that magnetic-north and the magnetic-south may have swapped places, kinda. This is pole reversal and it is gradual.
These changes occur on a wide range of timescales, so much so that the complete reversal of the geomagnetic poles may take up to 200,000 years, gradually. The structure of Earth’s magnetic field is continuously changing, implying that the pole shift is happening right now as I write this, albeit very very very very slowly. It is evident that these changes are taking place all the time and the apprehensions concerned with the false description of a sudden/instantaneous pole shift are misplaced. However, large changes that weaken the magnetic field intensity at any near-Earth location may enable increased charged particle flux from the ghastly solar winds through the Earth's protective shield and hence can have drastic consequences on our satellites and communication systems. The changes are slow, gradual and controllable; not apocalyptic. And unlike muslims claim, reversal is purely magnetic, not geographic.
According to Islam, the last hour means when the mountains will be flying in the air like wool. (Surah al-Qar’iah Ayaat 1-5). But the reversal of magnetic poles will not cause any such destruction of mountains.
